Description

♟️ Why is this still the world’s best-selling chess book?

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess has been in print for over fifty years and remains the best-selling chess tactics book in history. Fischer, Margulies and Mosenfelder solved a real pedagogical problem in 1966 that conventional tactics books hadn’t: readers look at the solution without genuinely trying to solve the exercise first. When you see the solution first, the learning is superficial — you recognise it’s correct but haven’t built the ability to find it independently.

Fischer’s solution was physical: make it impossible to see the solution without first committing to an answer. The result is a book that produces deeper learning than any conventional puzzle collection — effective decades later because the pedagogical problem it solved is still the same.

🎯 Who is this book for?

  • Players who have just learned the rules and want to take their first step into tactics
  • Beginners who want to develop checkmate vision systematically
  • Anyone who wants to study tactics with the most effective active learning method available

📖 Contents

Introduction (pp.8-23): a complete chess rules summary that makes the book self-sufficient. From page 33 the circular format begins: every page is on the right, each problem is on the right-hand page, to see the solution the reader turns the page — which hides it while working. At the end the reader turns the book 180° and continues. No way to see the solution without processing the problem first. 6 chapters: Elements of checkmate (pp.24-111), Back-rank mates (112-163), Back-rank defences and variations (164-201), Displacing the defenders (202-244), Attacks on the pawn barrier (245-300), Final review (301-341). Translated by Antonio Gude Fernández.

👤 About the author

Bobby Fischer (1943-2008): eleventh world chess champion, 1972 match against Spassky, the «Match of the Century». First and to date only American citizen to win the World Chess Championship. Peak rating of 2785, not surpassed until the Kasparov era.

♟️ Why we recommend it at Chesscul

At Chesscul we recommend this when beginner students know the rules and want their first step into tactics. The circular format forces thinking through each position before seeing the solution. Half an hour with this book produces more real learning than an hour looking at solutions in any other format.
