Description

This great work by Mark Dvoretsky, widely regarded as the best chess coach in the world, reminds us of the importance of considering not only our own plans but also those of our opponent. Often, players forget that their adversary is trying to counter their threats while simultaneously imposing their own conditions on the game—a typical error in competitive chess.

The book consists of four closely connected chapters, aimed at teaching the reader to think not only about their own plans but also about the opponent’s. The chapters “Attention to the Opponent’s Resources,” “The Method of Elimination,” “Traps,” and “Preventive Thinking”—include numerous exercises covering both tactical and positional phases, which are closely intertwined. Each chapter begins with a theoretical introduction and well-explained examples.

In the exercise solutions, the author delves into the nuances of each analyzed position. “I aim to explore aspects that authors of other books often ignore. In this new work, I’ve tried to reproduce the logic behind decision-making,” says Dvoretsky.

As noted in the preface, the vast majority of examples in this book do not appear in his other works. For many years, Spanish readers have not had access to a book by this tireless coach, who has trained top Grandmasters including Kasparov, Anand, Topalov, Bareev, and Yusupov.
