Description

♟️ What does this second volume cover?

The period 1942-1956 is the most important stage of Botvinnik’s career as an active player. It includes his victory in the 1948 world title tournament — where he won without playing a single tiebreak game — his 12-12 tie with Bronstein in 1951 — the most thrilling World Championship match in history — and his victory against Smyslov in 1954. These are the years where the Botvinnik method demonstrated its effectiveness at the highest level.

The games from this period are the most studied of his entire career. His annotations are also the most developed: Botvinnik had enough distance to analyse them with perspective but fresh enough memory to recall the thought processes behind the most important decisions. The result is a set of analyses combining technical depth with honesty about his own mistakes.

🎯 Who is this book for?

  • Advanced players who want to study Botvinnik’s chess during his period as world champion
  • Chess history fans interested in the great Soviet matches and tournaments of classical chess
  • Coaches looking for examples of long-term strategic planning for advanced students

📚 The match with Bronstein: the volume’s core

The Botvinnik-Bronstein 1951 match is one of the most commented in chess history. It ended 12-12, with the title going to Botvinnik as defending champion. The games from that match are some of the most original and complex played in the first half of the 20th century, and Botvinnik’s annotations — in which he more than once lost an advantage he had — are of exceptional analytical honesty.

👤 About the author

Mikhail Botvinnik (1911-1995) was a Soviet Grandmaster and world chess champion in three periods (1948-57, 1958-60, 1961-63). He is considered the father of the modern Soviet chess school and the indirect coach of Spassky, Petrosian, Karpov and Kasparov.

♟️ Why we recommend it at Chesscul

At Chesscul we recommend this second volume as the most instructive in the series for studying long-term strategic planning: the 1942-1956 games show Botvinnik at his best, with exceptional positional understanding and an ability to build long-term plans that remains a reference for any player wanting to improve their strategic understanding.

🔗 Recommended companions

  • Strategy I: the first volume of the same series, with Botvinnik’s games between 1923 and 1941, showing the development of the style that culminates here.
  • Strategy III: the third volume, with the 1957-1970 games including the return matches with Smyslov and Tal.
  • Tournament Chess. Candidates. Zurich 1953: Bronstein annotates the tournament that selected Botvinnik’s 1954 challenger — the perfect counterpoint to this volume.
