Description

♟️ What does this third volume cover?

The period 1957-1970 is the most dramatic of Botvinnik’s career. He lost the title to Smyslov in 1957, recovered it in the 1958 return match, lost it to Tal in 1960 — arguably the most creative player of his generation — and recovered it again in the 1961 return match. He is the only world champion ever to have won the title three separate times, and he did so through a level of preparation and study that left his contemporaries astonished.

The games of this period — especially those of the Tal match — are some of the most studied in World Championship history after the Fischer-Spassky 1972 match. The contrast between Botvinnik’s positional style and Tal’s tactical, visionary style produces games of exceptional complexity and richness. Botvinnik’s annotations about those games are the most extensive in the series and the most revealing about his analytical process.

🎯 Who is this book for?

  • Advanced players who want to complete their study of Botvinnik’s career
  • Chess history fans interested in the great World Championship matches of the 1950s and 60s
  • Coaches looking for examples of tactical and strategic adaptation in positions of maximum difficulty

📖 Contents

The book covers the period 1957-1970 with annotated games from the most important events of Botvinnik’s final stage as champion:

  • Games from the match with Smyslov 1957 (title loss)
  • Games from the return match with Smyslov 1958 (title recovery)
  • Games from the match with Tal 1960 (title loss to the «Magician from Riga»)
  • Games from the return match with Tal 1961 (third and final title recovery)
  • Games from the major tournaments of the period 1963-1970
  • Training games and analyses, plus results, openings index

📚 The match with Tal: the most studied series in the volume

The Botvinnik-Tal 1960 match is probably the most analysed in World Championship history after Fischer-Spassky 1972. Tal’s style — intuitive sacrifices, unanalysable complications, constant psychological pressure — was the exact opposite of Botvinnik’s style. The games from that match show Botvinnik trying to rationalise positions that are, by definition, irrational. His annotations about those games are the most honest and instructive in the entire series.

👤 About the author

Mikhail Botvinnik (1911-1995) was a Soviet Grandmaster and world chess champion in three periods (1948-57, 1958-60, 1961-63). He is the only champion in history to have recovered the title twice. After retiring from active competition, he founded the Botvinnik Chess School, through which Karpov and Kasparov passed.

♟️ Why we recommend it at Chesscul

At Chesscul we recommend this third volume as the natural conclusion of the series and the richest in terms of variety of styles: the games against Smyslov, Tal and the new generation of Soviet players of the 1960s show Botvinnik adapting his method to completely different opponents. That adaptability is itself a lesson for any advanced player.
