Alexei Shirov (born 1972 in Riga, Latvia) is a Grandmaster and one of the most creative players in modern chess. He reached world number 2 in 1994 and was selected to play the World Championship match against Kasparov in 1998, though the match was never held. He is known for the depth and originality of his sacrifices, which have inspired a whole generation of players.
