Description

♟️ Why Shirov and why this second volume?

Alexei Shirov is the most spectacular player that the chess of the 1990s produced. His style combines intuitive sacrifice with deep calculation in a way no other player of his generation has replicated. His games aren’t played to convince the opponent that the position is bad: they’re played to create positions so complex that the opponent cannot calculate them correctly under time pressure. Volume I, Fire on the Board, covered his games up to 1996 and became one of the best-selling chess books of the last generation. This second volume collects the maturity period: Shirov already in the elite, facing Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand as equals.

The period 1997-2004 includes some of the most memorable moments of his career: his victory in the 2000 FIDE World Championship, the game against Topalov that many consider the most beautiful of the 20th century (Shirov-Topalov, Linares 1998, with the bishop sacrifice on h3) and his Candidates match with Kramnik. Shirov annotates each game with the same energy with which he played it.

🎯 Who is this book for?

  • Advanced players who want to study initiative and sacrificial chess from elite games
  • Chess fans who enjoy creative chess and want to understand how a specialist in complex positions thinks
  • Coaches looking for modern elite annotated game material with sacrifices and dynamic positions for advanced students

📖 Contents

The book covers the period 1997-2004 with annotated games from the most important tournaments and matches of Shirov’s mature career:

  • Games from the major tournaments: Linares, Wijk aan Zee, Dortmund
  • The Shirov-Topalov game, Linares 1998 (the bishop sacrifice on h3 that many consider the best game of the 20th century)
  • Games from his Candidates match with Kramnik
  • Games from the 2000 FIDE World Championship
  • Shirov’s own annotations on the calculation process in the most complex positions

📚 Shirov’s calculation process

What distinguishes Shirov’s annotations from those of other elite players is that he doesn’t hide the complexity: when he couldn’t calculate to the end, he says so. When he trusted his intuition, he explains what made him trust it. When the opponent found a resource he hadn’t anticipated, he analyses it honestly. That transparency about the decision-making process in extremely complex positions is a learning tool that goes beyond the analysis of the moves.

👤 About the author

Alexei Shirov (born 1972 in Riga, Latvia) is a Grandmaster and one of the most creative players in modern chess. He reached world number 2 in 1994 and was selected to play the World Championship match against Kasparov in 1998, though the match was never held. He is known for the depth and originality of his sacrifices, which have inspired a whole generation of players.

♟️ Why we recommend it at Chesscul

At Chesscul we recommend this book to advanced students who want to develop their dynamic chess. Shirov’s games are a laboratory of initiative, sacrifice and practical pressure. The annotations about the calculation process are especially valuable for understanding how tactical intuition works in positions where exhaustive calculation isn’t possible.
