England has one of the strongest chess traditions in the world. The English Chess Federation supports hundreds of clubs from London to Newcastle, and English players have shaped modern opening theory at the highest level. The country that produced Nigel Short and Michael Adams takes the game seriously at every level — from primary school tournaments to national league competition. Chesscul brings structured, progressive online coaching into that tradition: live lessons in English, taught by a qualified teacher with a 2000+ FIDE rating, timed to work around English school hours and working life.
Our online chess lessons in England are open to all ages. For children, the structured approach develops focused, analytical thinking that benefits every subject at school — and our teachers know how to make that engaging. For adults, whether returning to a game played as a teenager or starting completely fresh, the curriculum delivers real, measurable improvement at a pace that fits around daily life. Two one-hour sessions per week, in small groups capped at 15 students, so individual attention is always part of the lesson.
We run three levels for students in England, each with its own teacher and curriculum. Beginner classes build the complete foundation: piece movement, opening principles, core tactical patterns and basic endgame technique — not a crash course, but a structured path that leaves students understanding why each idea works. Intermediate classes target the specific areas where most club players plateau: tactical calculation, strategic planning, pawn structures and technical endgames. Advanced classes work at competitive level — deep preparation, complex middlegame analysis and disciplined study habits for students targeting real rating improvement.
Two weekly time slots at different times are available for each level, so students across England can find a schedule that fits. Not sure where to start? Our free level test gives a clear recommendation in two minutes.
Every Chesscul group is taught live by a qualified chess teacher. Alberto Toval, founder and head teacher, holds a 2000+ FIDE Elo rating and a Superior Monitor qualification from FADA with over 15 years of coaching experience. Luis Troughton leads the intermediate groups and focuses on the tactical and strategic development that turns casual club players into consistent competitors. Carmen María López teaches the beginners with particular expertise in younger learners and adult first-timers.
For students in England, online lessons remove the most common practical barrier: outside London and a handful of larger cities, finding qualified chess coaching is genuinely difficult. Our format gives students in Derby, Portsmouth or Bournemouth the same live, interactive lesson — shared board, real-time analysis, direct teacher contact — as anyone in central London. No commute, no geography tax on quality.
The course runs on a fixed weekly structure — two one-hour live sessions per week, same days and times, with the same group throughout the year. Consistency is the foundation of chess improvement: students who attend regularly and follow a coherent curriculum improve steadily; those who dip in and out rarely make lasting progress. Topics are sequenced deliberately — openings, tactics, strategy, endgames — so every concept builds on the last. No gaps, no randomness, no repetition.
Pre-registration for September 2026 groups is open now with no payment required. We confirm each place within 48 hours. Billing begins in September: €39/month for beginner and intermediate, €49/month for advanced — no enrolment fee, no minimum term, cancel at any month end. Between sessions, the Chesscul platform provides exercises and materials to extend learning beyond the two weekly live hours.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something affordable where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. The atmosphere is friendly, classes have a maximum of 15 students, and they run monthly tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
