Chess Scotland, founded in 1884, is one of the oldest chess federations in the world — a fact that reflects how deeply the game is rooted in Scottish culture. Clubs run across the country from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Aberdeen and Inverness, and Scottish players have competed at national and international level for generations. Yet outside the Central Belt, regular, qualified coaching has always been hard to access. Chesscul changes that directly: the same live, structured lesson reaches students in the Highlands or the Borders as those in the centre of Glasgow, with timetables built around GMT and BST to suit Scottish schools and working hours.
Our online chess lessons in Scotland welcome all ages. Children develop concentration, forward planning and the discipline of thinking before acting — skills that transfer across every subject. Adults who want to improve their club performance or simply learn the game properly for the first time will find a structured, progressive method that delivers measurable results without requiring a commute. Two sessions a week, one hour each, in groups of no more than 15 students.
Three separate levels for Scottish students, each with a dedicated teacher and curriculum. Beginner groups take students from the rules through opening principles, core tactical patterns and basic endgame technique — building a solid, well-rounded foundation. Intermediate groups target the specific areas where most club players plateau: calculation, strategic planning, pawn structure and technical endgame conversion. Advanced groups work at competitive level, with deep preparation and complex analysis for students targeting real rating improvement.
Two weekly time slots are available at each level. Not sure which level is the right fit? Our free level test gives a recommendation in two minutes.
Every Chesscul group is taught live by a qualified chess teacher, entirely in English. Alberto Toval, the school's founder, is a 2000+ FIDE Elo player and Superior Monitor with FADA, with over 15 years of coaching experience. Luis Troughton leads the intermediate groups, focusing on the tactical and strategic development that helps club players improve consistently. Carmen María López teaches beginner groups with specialist expertise in younger learners and adult first-timers.
For Scottish students, the online format removes the biggest barrier to serious improvement: geography. A student in Inverness or a smaller town in Fife gets exactly the same live, interactive lesson — shared board, real-time analysis, direct teacher contact — as anyone in central Edinburgh. The quality does not change based on location. Classes are in English, on British time, with no complications.
Two one-hour live sessions per week, fixed days and times, with the same group throughout the year. Consistency drives improvement — students who follow a coherent curriculum improve steadily; those who attend occasionally rarely develop beyond their starting level. Topics are sequenced in a logical order: openings, tactical patterns, strategic plans, endgame technique, each building on the previous. No gaps, no jumps.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something affordable where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. The atmosphere is friendly, classes have a maximum of 15 students, and they run monthly tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
