The Ulster Chess Union, which has been organising competitive chess in Northern Ireland for over a century, supports an active community of clubs in Belfast, Derry and beyond. Local players compete regularly at British and Irish national level, and youth chess in schools across Belfast has a solid tradition. Even so, access to regular, qualified coaching outside the main club centres has been limited. Chesscul's online format addresses that directly: live lessons in English, timed to GMT and BST, available from anywhere in Northern Ireland with a broadband connection.
Our online chess lessons in Northern Ireland are for children and adults at every stage. Children develop concentration, logical thinking and the ability to plan ahead — skills that transfer directly to the classroom. Adults looking to improve at club level or learn the game properly for the first time will find a structured, progressive method that respects their time and delivers real results. All classes run twice a week in small groups capped at 15, so individual attention is part of every session.
Three separate levels for students in Northern Ireland, each with a dedicated teacher and curriculum. Beginner classes build the full foundation: piece movement, opening principles, core tactical patterns and simple endgame technique. Students leave with genuine understanding, not just surface familiarity. Intermediate classes address the areas where most club players get stuck: calculation, strategic planning, pawn structure and technical endgame conversion. Advanced classes are for competitive students targeting rating improvement — deep preparation, complex analysis and disciplined study habits.
Two weekly time slots at different times accommodate school schedules and working hours across Northern Ireland. Unsure which level to start at? Our free level test identifies the right starting point in two minutes.
All Chesscul groups are taught live by a qualified chess teacher, entirely in English. Alberto Toval, the school's founder, is a 2000+ FIDE Elo player and Superior Monitor with FADA, with over 15 years of coaching experience across multiple levels and age groups. Luis Troughton leads the intermediate groups with a strong connection to the British chess scene and a focus on developing the tactical and strategic habits that produce consistent competitive results. Carmen María López teaches the beginner groups with specialist expertise in younger students and adult beginners.
For students in Northern Ireland, the online format removes the single biggest barrier to regular improvement: proximity to a club with a qualified coach. Whether you are in central Belfast or a smaller town in County Antrim or Down, you get the same live, interactive lesson — shared board, real-time analysis, direct teacher contact — as any other student. The quality is identical regardless of location, and everything is in English on British time.
Two one-hour live sessions per week, fixed days and times, with the same group throughout the year. Regular attendance and a coherent curriculum are what drive chess improvement — our course is built around both. Topics are introduced in a logical sequence: openings, tactical patterns, strategic plans, endgame technique, each concept reinforcing the last. Students develop structured understanding of the game rather than a collection of disconnected ideas.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something affordable where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. The atmosphere is friendly, classes have a maximum of 15 students, and they run monthly tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
