Online chess lessons in Ireland — children and adults

Ireland has a genuine chess culture that goes well beyond casual games. Chess Ireland, the national federation, supports an active network of clubs from Dublin and Cork to Galway and Limerick, and Irish players compete regularly at European and world level. That competitive spirit is exactly what Chesscul brings to the online format: structured, progressive coaching that takes students from their first moves all the way to tournament-level thinking, delivered entirely in English and timed to work with Irish school and work schedules.

Our online chess lessons in Ireland are open to all ages. Children from around six years old benefit from a curriculum that builds concentration, logical reasoning and patience alongside chess technique. Adults — whether returning to a game they once played or picking it up for the first time — work through the same structured method at a pace that fits around their commitments. Classes run twice a week, one hour per session, in small groups of no more than 15 students so the teacher can give genuine individual attention to every person in the room.

Chess classes in Ireland: beginner, intermediate and advanced

We run three separate levels for Irish students, each with its own dedicated teacher and curriculum. Beginner groups cover the full foundation: piece movement and basic rules, opening principles, elementary tactics such as forks and pins, and simple endgame technique. Students who complete this level have a solid, well-rounded base they can build on for the rest of their chess life. Intermediate groups are designed for players who already know the game but have hit a ceiling — they work on tactical calculation, strategic plans, pawn structures and technical endgames, the areas where most club players stagnate. Advanced groups work at competitive level: deep preparation, complex middlegame positions, precise endgame technique and the kind of structured thinking that translates into real rating improvement.

Each level has two weekly groups with different timetables, so Irish students can find a slot that fits — early afternoon for school-age children, early evening for adults and working professionals. Not sure which group is right for you? Our free level test gives you a recommendation in under two minutes.

Chess teacher in Ireland — live online classes in English

Every Chesscul group is taught by a real, qualified chess teacher — not a pre-recorded video, not an automated platform. Alberto Toval, who founded Chesscul in Málaga in 2024, holds a 2000+ FIDE Elo rating and a Superior Monitor qualification from FADA, with over 15 years of competitive play and structured coaching experience. In that time Chesscul has grown to more than 100 active students and attracted coverage from over 200 media outlets across Spain and Latin America. Carmen María López teaches the beginner groups, specialising in first-time learners and younger students. Luis Troughton, who has a close connection to the UK and Ireland chess scene, leads the intermediate groups and focuses on helping players make the step from casual play to consistent improvement.

For students in Ireland, the practical advantage is significant. Finding a qualified chess coach in most Irish towns outside Dublin is genuinely difficult; online lessons remove that barrier entirely while keeping the interactive, teacher-led format that makes structured learning work. All classes use a shared live board — students follow every move in real time, ask questions during the session and analyse positions together with the teacher. The same quality as an in-person lesson, without the commute.

Chess course in Ireland: how our online method works

The Chesscul course follows a fixed weekly structure: two one-hour sessions per week, same days, same time, with the same group of students throughout the year. That consistency is deliberate — chess improvement requires regular practice and repetition, and sporadic drop-in sessions rarely produce lasting results. The curriculum moves through openings, middlegame tactics and strategy, and endgame technique in a logical sequence, so every concept builds on the previous one. There are no gaps, no jumps and no assumptions about prior knowledge beyond what the level test confirmed at enrolment.

Joining is straightforward. Pre-register for the group that matches your level and schedule — no payment is required at this stage. We confirm your place personally within 48 hours, and classes begin in September 2026. Month-to-month billing starts then, with no enrolment fee and no minimum term. Beginner and intermediate groups are €39/month; advanced groups are €49/month. Between sessions, the Chesscul platform gives students access to exercises and materials, so the learning continues beyond the two weekly hours in class.

Happy students
from our school

★★★★★

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something affordable where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. The atmosphere is friendly, classes have a maximum of 15 students, and they run monthly tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."

"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful."

"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
