Chess Wales coordinates an active network of clubs and competitions that runs from Cardiff and Swansea in the south to Wrexham in the north. The game has a well-established presence in Welsh schools and community clubs, with players competing at national level regularly. But like much of the UK outside the major English cities, finding consistent, structured coaching from a qualified teacher has been difficult for most students in Wales. Chesscul's online format changes that: live lessons in English, on GMT and BST timetables, accessible from anywhere in Wales with a broadband connection.
Our online chess lessons in Wales are for children and adults at any level. For families, chess is a structured, productive activity that builds patient, analytical thinking — skills that benefit children across all school subjects. For adults, it offers a genuine intellectual challenge with clear milestones and visible progress. Two one-hour sessions per week in groups capped at 15, so individual attention is always part of every lesson.
Three levels for Welsh students, each with its own teacher and curriculum. Beginner classes cover everything a new player needs — piece movement, opening principles, core tactics and basic endgame technique — building real understanding rather than surface-level familiarity. Intermediate classes work on the areas that separate improving players from those who stagnate: calculation, strategic plans, pawn structures and technical endgame conversion. Advanced classes are for serious students targeting competitive results — deep preparation, complex analysis and the disciplined habits that produce consistent rating improvement.
Two weekly time slots at different times suit school hours and working schedules across Wales. Unsure which level fits? Our free level test takes two minutes.
All Chesscul groups are taught live by a qualified chess teacher, entirely in English. Alberto Toval, the school's founder, holds a 2000+ FIDE Elo rating and a Superior Monitor qualification from FADA with over 15 years of experience. Luis Troughton leads the intermediate groups, specialising in the tactical and strategic development that helps club players improve consistently. Carmen María López teaches the beginner groups with particular expertise in younger learners and adult beginners.
For students in Wales, the practical value is clear. In a country where much of the population lives outside the four main cities, access to qualified chess coaching has depended on living near a club with an experienced instructor. Online lessons remove that dependency entirely. A student in Wrexham or the Valleys gets the same live, interactive lesson — shared board, real-time analysis, direct teacher contact — as anyone in Cardiff. Geography no longer determines quality.
Two one-hour live sessions per week, fixed days and times, same group throughout the year. Regular attendance and a structured curriculum are the two things that drive chess improvement — our course is built around both. Topics are introduced in a logical sequence: openings, tactical patterns, strategic plans, endgame technique, each reinforcing the previous. Students follow a clear path from where they are to where they want to be.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something affordable where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. The atmosphere is friendly, classes have a maximum of 15 students, and they run monthly tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
