In this post, we explain step by step, clearly and simply, the different types of titles, the requirements you must meet to obtain them, and how you can start planning your path toward them today.
What Are FIDE Titles?
FIDE titles are official recognitions awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to players who have demonstrated a high level of competitive performance. They are considered the most prestigious titles in international chess and are valid for life.
There are different titles depending on the level achieved:
- FM – FIDE Master
- IM – International Master
- GM – Grandmaster
- And entry-level titles such as CM (Candidate Master), which we will briefly explain.
FM Title (FIDE Master)
Requirements:
- Reach a FIDE rating of 2300 or higher on the official FIDE rating list.
- No norms or special tournaments are required. The title is awarded automatically once this rating is achieved.
When Is It Awarded?
Once you reach 2300 Elo, your national federation can submit the application to FIDE so that the title can be officially granted.
IM Title (International Master)
Requirements:
- Reach a FIDE rating of at least 2400 at any point (it does not need to be maintained permanently).
- Achieve 3 IM norms in eligible tournaments.
What Is a Norm?
A norm is a specific performance in a tournament that meets certain technical requirements:
- A minimum of 9 rounds.
- Must include players from at least 3 different federations.
- A required minimum number of titled opponents.
- A performance rating equivalent to 2450 Elo or higher.
These norms must be achieved in tournaments approved by titled FIDE arbiters and officially submitted.
GM Title (Grandmaster)
This is the highest title a player can achieve (excluding honorary titles or World Champion status).
Requirements:
- Reach a FIDE rating of at least 2500 (even if only once).
- Achieve 3 GM norms under the same criteria as IM norms, but with a minimum performance rating equivalent to 2600 Elo.
This title is extremely demanding and represents the elite level of world chess. Only a few thousand players in history have achieved it.
Lower Title: CM (Candidate Master)
In addition to the higher titles, FIDE also awards the CM (Candidate Master) title, which generally requires reaching 2200 Elo in most federations, though in some cases it may be awarded starting at 2000 Elo, depending on local regulations.
In many countries, this title is also awarded as recognition in international youth tournaments.
Who Submits the Title Application to FIDE?
Once the requirements (rating and/or norms) are fulfilled, your national federation is responsible for submitting the official application to FIDE. The title is approved during one of the quarterly meetings of the FIDE Titles Commission.
In some cases, you may pay the corresponding fee yourself and apply directly if your federation allows it.
