Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland and one of the most rapidly developing cities in the United Kingdom — a city with a strong university sector, excellent schools, a growing technology and creative economy, and a chess community with roots in both school competition and adult club play. Chess Northern Ireland organises events across the country, and Belfast students have competed consistently at provincial and UK level in junior categories. Chesscul brings structured, professional online chess coaching to Belfast students of all ages, with lessons delivered entirely in English and timetables aligned to BST/GMT for Northern Ireland and UK schedules.
Our chess lessons in Belfast are designed for all ages and starting points. For children in Belfast's primary and secondary schools, chess builds the structured thinking, concentration and decision-making skills that benefit academic performance and carry into adult life. For adults across the city — whether in the university sector, professional services, healthcare or any other field — two organised sessions per week in a small, consistent group offer a clear path to improving a demanding and rewarding game. Group sizes are kept to a maximum of 15 students to ensure that individual attention is genuinely built into every lesson.
Three structured levels give Belfast students a clear curriculum from complete beginner to competitive advanced. Beginner classes build the entire foundation — how each piece moves, sound opening principles, the core tactical patterns that decide most games at entry level, and fundamental endgame technique — creating genuine understanding rather than a hurried overview. Intermediate classes address the ceiling most club players reach: systematic calculation, strategic planning from pawn structures, and reliable endgame conversion. Advanced classes work at competitive level for Belfast students targeting Northern Ireland national or UK-level competition, with complex position analysis and rigorous preparation in every session.
Two time slots at each level give flexibility for school timetables and working schedules. Unsure of your level? The free level test takes two minutes and gives a clear recommendation.
All Chesscul groups are led live by a qualified chess teacher, taught entirely in English. Alberto Toval, the school's founder and director, holds a 2000+ FIDE Elo rating and a Superior Monitor qualification from FADA with over 15 years of competitive and coaching experience across Europe and internationally. Carmen María López teaches the beginner groups with specialist expertise in younger learners and adult beginners. Luis Troughton leads the intermediate groups, focusing on the tactical and strategic development that moves students from foundation to competitive play.
For Belfast students, online chess coaching removes the barriers of geography and scheduling that limit access to qualified instruction. Whether you're in South Belfast, the Cathedral Quarter, East Belfast or anywhere else across the city, you get the same live, interactive session — shared board, real-time position analysis, direct teacher contact throughout — as any student in the group. Belfast's chess community is among the most active in the UK, and Chesscul gives every student in the city access to coaching that matches the standard available anywhere in Britain.
Two one-hour live sessions per week, fixed days and times, with the same group throughout the year. Real chess improvement requires consistent, structured practice — the Chesscul curriculum is designed entirely around that principle. Topics are introduced in a deliberate sequence: openings, tactical patterns, strategic plans, endgame technique, each concept building on the previous one. No gaps, no shortcuts, no jumps — a coherent path from a student's current ability to a genuinely higher standard of play.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something that wouldn't get too expensive and where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. It's great because we cover all kinds of content, the atmosphere is friendly, and classes have a maximum of 10 to 15 students. They also run tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online teaching method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful. Thank you."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational at the same time — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
