Lisburn is one of Northern Ireland's most prosperous cities — a major residential and commercial centre in County Antrim, immediately adjacent to Belfast, with excellent schools, a large family population and strong road and rail links to the capital. Chess in Lisburn and the surrounding area has a growing presence in school competition, with students from the city participating in Ulster and Northern Ireland junior events. Chesscul brings structured, professional online chess coaching to Lisburn students of all ages, with lessons delivered entirely in English and timetables aligned to BST/GMT for Northern Ireland schedules.
Our chess lessons in Lisburn are designed for children, teenagers and adults at every level. For younger students, chess builds the concentrated, step-by-step thinking that makes a real difference to academic performance — a benefit that Lisburn families with children in the area's excellent grammar and secondary schools have increasingly recognised. For adults in Lisburn and the wider Lagan Valley, two structured sessions per week in a small group offer an intellectually demanding activity that fits comfortably around a full working and family schedule. Group sizes are kept to a maximum of 15 students.
Chesscul offers three structured levels for Lisburn students. Beginner classes cover everything from the beginning — how each piece moves and captures, how to develop pieces soundly in the opening, the tactical patterns that appear in almost every game at entry level, and the fundamental endgame technique that allows winning positions to be converted. Intermediate classes address the specific ceiling most experienced players encounter: how to calculate variations accurately, how to form and execute strategic plans, and how to convert the technical endgames that matter at club level. Advanced classes are for Lisburn students targeting Ulster or Northern Ireland national competition, with rigorous preparation and complex position analysis built into every session.
Two time slots at each level give flexibility for school and work schedules. The free level test takes two minutes and gives a clear result.
All Chesscul groups are taught live by a qualified chess teacher in English. Alberto Toval, the school's director, holds a 2000+ FIDE Elo rating and a Superior Monitor qualification from FADA with over 15 years of competitive and teaching experience. Carmen María López leads the beginner groups with specialist expertise in younger learners and adult beginners taking their first steps in chess. Luis Troughton teaches the intermediate groups with a focus on the tactical and strategic development that moves students from a sound foundation to consistently competitive results.
For Lisburn students, the online format removes the need to travel to Belfast for quality chess instruction. Whether you're in Lisburn city centre, Hillsborough, Moira or anywhere across the Lagan Valley, you join the same live, interactive lesson — shared board, real-time position analysis, direct contact with the teacher — as any student in the group. Being close to Belfast gives Lisburn students excellent options; online chess coaching gives them one more.
Two one-hour live sessions each week, fixed schedule, same group throughout the year. Improvement in chess is not accidental — it comes from structured, deliberate practice applied consistently. The Chesscul curriculum is built entirely around that principle, introducing topics in a logical sequence — openings, tactical patterns, strategic plans, endgame technique — where each concept builds on what came before. Students in Lisburn follow the same curriculum as students anywhere else in the UK, taught to the same standard by the same teachers.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something that wouldn't get too expensive and where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. It's great because we cover all kinds of content, the atmosphere is friendly, and classes have a maximum of 10 to 15 students. They also run tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online teaching method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful. Thank you."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational at the same time — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
