Newport is one of Wales's largest cities — a commercially active city in Gwent with strong transport links to Cardiff and Bristol, a large school-age population and an established base of families and working professionals. Chess has a following in Newport's school community, with students from the area competing in South Wales and Welsh national junior events. Chesscul brings structured, professional online chess coaching to Newport students of all ages, with lessons delivered entirely in English and timetables aligned to BST/GMT for UK schedules.
Our chess lessons in Newport cover all ages and starting points. For children in Newport's primary and secondary schools, chess builds the structured thinking and concentration that academic learning also requires — a combination that makes chess one of the most beneficial extracurricular activities a student can pursue. For adults across Newport and the surrounding Gwent area, two organised sessions per week in a small, consistent group provide a clear, progressive path to improving a genuinely demanding skill. Group sizes are capped at 15 to ensure individual attention is a real part of every lesson.
Chesscul offers three structured levels for Newport students. Beginner classes start at the very beginning and build the complete foundation — piece movement, opening soundness, the tactical patterns that appear in every competitive game, and the endgame technique needed to convert winning positions. Intermediate classes tackle the specific barriers that prevent most experienced players from improving: systematic calculation, strategic planning from first principles, pawn structure understanding and technical endgame conversion. Advanced classes are designed for Newport students targeting Welsh national or UK competition, with rigorous preparation and complex position work in every session.
Two time slots at each level offer flexibility for school hours and working schedules across Newport and Gwent. Not sure which level is right? The free level test gives a clear answer in two minutes.
All Chesscul groups are led live by a qualified chess teacher, taught entirely in English. Alberto Toval, the school's founder and director, holds a 2000+ FIDE Elo rating and a Superior Monitor qualification from FADA with over 15 years of competitive and teaching experience across Europe. Carmen María López teaches the beginner groups, specialising in younger learners and adult beginners. Luis Troughton leads the intermediate groups, focusing on the tactical and strategic development that transforms solid foundations into consistently competitive play.
For Newport students, the online format offers structured, professional chess coaching without requiring travel to Cardiff or another city. A student in Maindee, Caerleon, Cwmbran or anywhere across the Newport and Torfaen area joins the same live, interactive lesson — shared board, real-time analysis, direct teacher contact throughout — as any other student in the group. The quality of the coaching is not a function of where you live.
Two one-hour live sessions per week, fixed schedule, same group throughout the year. Chess improvement is not a product of occasional play — it requires deliberate, structured practice. The Chesscul curriculum is built entirely around that principle: topics introduced in a logical order, each concept building on the one before, with no gaps and no jumps. Openings, tactical patterns, strategic plans, endgame technique — a coherent path from a student's current ability to a measurably higher standard.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something that wouldn't get too expensive and where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. It's great because we cover all kinds of content, the atmosphere is friendly, and classes have a maximum of 10 to 15 students. They also run tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online teaching method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful. Thank you."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational at the same time — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
