Cardiff is the capital of Wales and one of the most vibrant cities in the United Kingdom — a university city with a young, diverse population, a strong tradition in sport and education, and a chess community that has grown consistently through school and club networks across the city. Cardiff Chess Club is among the most established in Wales, and students from Cardiff schools have competed at Welsh and UK level in junior competitions. Chesscul brings structured, professional online chess coaching directly to Cardiff students of all ages, with lessons taught entirely in English and timetables designed for UK and Wales schedules.
Our chess lessons in Cardiff are designed for all levels and age groups. For children in Cardiff's primary and secondary schools, regular chess coaching builds concentration, planning ability and the habit of thinking carefully before acting — skills that transfer directly to academic performance. For adults across the city, whether returning to chess after years away or learning for the first time, two structured sessions per week in small groups offer a clear path to real improvement without demanding large amounts of time. Groups are capped at 15 students to keep individual attention genuine in every lesson.
Three structured levels give Cardiff students a clear curriculum whatever their starting point. Beginner classes cover the complete foundation — piece movement, opening principles, fundamental tactical patterns including forks, pins and discovered attacks, and core endgame technique — building genuine understanding progressively. Intermediate classes target the plateau most experienced club players reach: systematic calculation, strategic planning, pawn structure analysis and technical endgame conversion. Advanced classes work at competitive level for Cardiff students targeting improvement in Welsh national or UK junior competition, with deep preparation, complex position work and disciplined study habits built into every session.
Two weekly time slots at each level provide flexibility for school timetables and working schedules. Unsure which level fits? Our free level test gives a clear recommendation in under two minutes.
All Chesscul groups are taught live by a qualified chess teacher, entirely in English. Alberto Toval, Chesscul's founder and director, holds a 2000+ FIDE Elo rating and a Superior Monitor qualification from FADA, with more than 15 years of competitive and teaching experience across Spain and internationally. Carmen María López leads the beginner groups with specialist expertise in younger learners and adult beginners. Luis Troughton teaches the intermediate groups with a focus on the tactical and strategic development that takes players from casual to consistently competitive.
For Cardiff students, the online format removes the scheduling friction that prevents many people from accessing quality chess coaching. Whether you're in Roath, Canton, Pontprennau or anywhere across the city, you get the same live, interactive lesson — shared board, real-time position analysis, direct contact with the teacher throughout — as any student in the group. Cardiff has Wales's largest concentration of chess talent, and Chesscul gives every student in the city access to qualified coaching that matches what any player in London or Madrid would receive.
Two one-hour live sessions per week, fixed days and times, with the same group throughout the year. Chess improvement depends on structured, consistent practice — the Chesscul curriculum is built entirely around that principle. Topics are introduced in a deliberate sequence: openings, tactical patterns, strategic plans, endgame technique, each concept reinforcing the previous one. No gaps, no shortcuts — a coherent, progressive path from a student's current level to a measurably higher standard of play.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something that wouldn't get too expensive and where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. It's great because we cover all kinds of content, the atmosphere is friendly, and classes have a maximum of 10 to 15 students. They also run tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online teaching method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful. Thank you."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational at the same time — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
