Drogheda is one of Ireland's fastest-growing towns — a historically significant place on the River Boyne that has developed into a major commuter and commercial centre for the northeast, with a large young population, active school community and strong ties to both Dublin and the Leinster border region. Chess in the area is represented at club and school level, with students from Drogheda participating in Leinster competitions regularly. Chesscul brings professional online coaching directly to Drogheda students, with lessons in English and schedules built around IST and GMT to suit families and professionals across the town and county.
Our chess lessons in Drogheda are open to children and adults at all levels. For children — particularly those in the town's primary and secondary schools — chess develops concentration, logical reasoning and the discipline of thinking before acting, skills that carry directly into academic performance. For adults, the structured curriculum offers a clear path to genuine improvement at a pace that fits around daily life. Two one-hour sessions per week in small groups capped at 15, with a teacher who tracks individual progress throughout the year.
Three levels for Drogheda students, each with a dedicated teacher and structured curriculum. Beginner classes cover everything from first principles — piece movement, opening logic, core tactical patterns and basic endgame technique — building understanding rather than surface familiarity. Intermediate classes focus on the areas where most club players plateau: systematic calculation, strategic planning, pawn structure and technical endgame conversion. Advanced classes target competitive improvement — deep preparation, complex middlegame analysis and disciplined study for students aiming to progress in Leinster or national competition.
Two weekly time slots suit school and working hours. Unsure which level to start with? Our free level test identifies the right starting point in two minutes.
All Chesscul groups are taught live by a qualified chess teacher, entirely in English. Alberto Toval, the school's founder, holds a 2000+ FIDE Elo rating and a Superior Monitor qualification from FADA with over 15 years of experience. Carmen María López teaches the beginner groups with specialist expertise in children and adult beginners. Luis Troughton leads the intermediate groups, focused on tactical and strategic development that builds consistent competitive improvement.
For Drogheda students, the online format means access to qualified, structured chess coaching without needing to travel to Dublin or a larger city. Any student in the town or across County Louth gets the same live, interactive lesson — shared board, real-time position analysis, direct contact with the teacher during class — as any other student in the group. Proximity to coaching quality is no longer a function of geography.
Two one-hour live sessions per week, fixed days and times, same group throughout the year. Chess develops through consistent, guided practice — students who follow a structured curriculum and attend reliably improve measurably; those without that structure rarely advance beyond their starting level. The curriculum sequences topics logically: openings, tactical patterns, strategic plans, endgame technique, each reinforcing the previous. No gaps, no jumps — just a clear path forward.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something that wouldn't get too expensive and where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. It's great because we cover all kinds of content, the atmosphere is friendly, and classes have a maximum of 10 to 15 students. They also run tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online teaching method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful. Thank you."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational at the same time — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
