Galway is one of Ireland's most distinctive cities — a university town with a strong cultural identity, an unusually young population and a reputation for creativity and academic achievement. Chess fits naturally into that environment: the game rewards exactly the kind of disciplined, analytical thinking that students and professionals in Galway already value. The Galway Chess Club is one of the most active in Connacht, and the city has produced players who compete at national level regularly. Chesscul's online format makes structured coaching accessible to every student in Galway and the surrounding area, with lessons in English on IST and GMT timetables built around Irish school and work hours.
Our chess lessons in Galway are for all ages. For children, particularly those at NUI Galway feeder schools or preparing for secondary education, chess develops concentration, patience and the habit of thinking ahead — cognitive skills that translate across every subject. For adults in Galway, whether you have played casually before or want to learn from scratch, the structured curriculum delivers real progress at a pace that works around your schedule. Two one-hour sessions per week in groups of no more than 15 students, with individual attention built into every lesson.
Three levels for Galway students, each with its own teacher and structured curriculum. Beginner classes build the complete foundation — piece movement, opening principles, core tactical patterns and basic endgame technique — not as a rapid overview but as a thorough, well-sequenced path that leaves students understanding why each idea works. Intermediate classes target the areas where most club players in Galway plateau: tactical calculation, strategic planning, pawn structure understanding and converting endgame advantages. Advanced classes are designed for competitive students targeting improvement in Connacht and national events — deep preparation, complex position analysis and the structured study habits that translate into rating gains.
Two weekly time slots at each level accommodate the varied schedules of Galway students, from primary school children to university students to working adults. Not sure which level is right? Our free level test takes two minutes and gives an instant recommendation.
All Chesscul groups are taught live by a qualified chess teacher in English. Alberto Toval, founder and head teacher, holds a 2000+ FIDE Elo rating and a Superior Monitor qualification from FADA — the Spanish Chess Federation's highest coaching certification — with over 15 years of experience teaching students of all ages and levels across multiple countries. Luis Troughton leads the intermediate groups with particular expertise in helping players develop the tactical and strategic thinking that drives consistent improvement. Carmen María López teaches the beginner groups, with specialist experience in younger learners and adults approaching chess for the first time.
For Galway students, online coaching removes a practical barrier that has limited access to quality instruction for years. Outside the main club in the city, regular structured lessons from a qualified teacher have been hard to find. An online format means a student in Salthill, Oranmore or anywhere in the county gets exactly the same lesson quality as anyone in the city centre — live board, real-time analysis, direct interaction with the teacher during the session. The distance from Galway to a qualified chess teacher is now zero.
Two one-hour live sessions per week, fixed days and times, with the same group of students throughout the year. The consistency of the schedule is what makes the method work: chess is not a skill that develops through occasional effort, and a structured curriculum means every session builds on the last. Topics are introduced in a deliberate sequence — openings, tactical patterns, strategic plans, endgame technique — and each one is practised and consolidated before moving on. Students in Galway finish each term with a measurably more complete understanding of the game than when they started.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something that wouldn't get too expensive and where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. It's great because we cover all kinds of content, the atmosphere is friendly, and classes have a maximum of 10 to 15 students. They also run tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online teaching method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful. Thank you."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational at the same time — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
