Waterford is Ireland's oldest city, a place with deep historical roots and a growing reputation in education and technology. Chess has a quiet but committed following in the city — the Waterford Chess Club is active in local and provincial competition, and the game is taught in several schools across the region. Chesscul brings structured, progressive online coaching to Waterford students of all ages, with lessons entirely in English and timetables aligned to IST and GMT to work around the daily routines of families and professionals in the city and county.
Our chess lessons in Waterford are open to all ages and levels. For children, the structured approach develops focus, analytical thinking and patient decision-making — exactly the kind of cognitive habits that benefit academic performance across all subjects. For adults in Waterford, whether picking up a game played in youth or starting for the first time, the curriculum delivers real, measurable improvement in a format that fits a busy schedule. Two one-hour sessions per week in groups capped at 15, with genuine individual attention built into every lesson.
Three levels for Waterford students, each with its own dedicated teacher and curriculum. Beginner classes cover the full foundation: piece movement, opening principles, core tactical patterns and basic endgame technique — a thorough, well-paced introduction that builds genuine understanding rather than surface familiarity. Intermediate classes address the specific areas where most club players plateau: calculation, strategic planning, pawn structures and technical endgame conversion. Advanced classes work at competitive level for students targeting improvement in provincial or national events — deep preparation, complex analysis and disciplined study habits.
Two weekly time slots at each level give flexibility for school hours and working schedules. Unsure which level is the right starting point? Our free level test takes two minutes and gives an instant recommendation.
All Chesscul groups are taught live by a qualified chess teacher, entirely in English. Alberto Toval, the school's founder, holds a 2000+ FIDE Elo rating and a Superior Monitor qualification from FADA with over 15 years of coaching experience at all levels. Carmen María López teaches the beginner groups with specialist experience in younger learners and first-time adult students. Luis Troughton leads the intermediate groups, focused on the tactical and strategic development that helps club players improve consistently.
For Waterford students, online lessons provide something that local options have rarely offered consistently: a qualified, experienced teacher, a structured curriculum and small-group sessions that happen reliably every week. A student anywhere in County Waterford gets the same live, interactive lesson — shared board, real-time analysis, direct teacher contact — as someone in the city centre. No commute, no geography constraint, no compromise on quality.
The Chesscul course runs on two one-hour live sessions per week, fixed days and times, with the same group of students throughout the year. Consistency is the mechanism of improvement — students who attend regularly and follow a coherent curriculum make steady, visible progress; those without a structured approach rarely develop beyond where they started. Topics are sequenced deliberately: openings, tactical patterns, strategic plans, endgame technique — each one building on the previous, with no gaps and no repetition.

"I've been at this school for a couple of weeks and I'm genuinely really happy. I was looking for something that wouldn't get too expensive and where I could interact directly with the teacher — not just watch videos online. It's great because we cover all kinds of content, the atmosphere is friendly, and classes have a maximum of 10 to 15 students. They also run tournaments which makes it much more enjoyable. Highly recommended."
"I've always known two things: chess is a way for me to take my thinking seriously, and at the same time a form of entertainment. What I didn't know is that at a school like Chesscul I could develop both. With teachers like Carmen and her online teaching method, I've discovered all of this. It's been wonderful. Thank you."
"My son has been at Chesscul for almost a year and he absolutely loves it. The classes are fun and educational at the same time — they do monthly tournaments that motivate him enormously, and his concentration has improved noticeably, which shows in his schoolwork too. 100% recommend."
